Anatomy scan

The 20-week ultrasound is also known as the anatomy scan. In Dutch the abbreviation for the scan is SEO. The purpose of the scan is purely medical and thus should not be considered lightly or seen as an ultrasound we do for fun . The preferred gestational age to perform the anatomy scan is between 19 and 20 weeks pregnant. That is why it is also known as the 20-week ultrasound. During this scan an ultrasound specialist will look at all visible organs and structures of the baby, the growth of the baby and the amount of amniotic fluid. Big structural abnormalities or defects become visible with this scan. When abnormalities or defects are seen, you will be referred to the gynaecologist for further research. It is important to keep in mind that a good result for the anatomy scan does not fully guarantee that the baby will be healthy once it is born. Luckily very few abnormalities are found within the group of low-risk pregnancies.
