Ultrasound

During an ultrasound, we look at the shape, position and size of your baby. The ultrasound machine translates sound waves into images. Making an ultrasound is not harmful to your baby. At the practice, several ultrasounds are made. We also have an ultrasound center together with the other obstetric practices in Oost: Verloskunde Centrum Oost (VCO). Here the 20-week ultrasound is done, but also all other regular ultrasounds can take place here.

1Vitality Echo

From seven-eight weeks of pregnancy, it is possible to have an ultrasound. During this ultrasound it can be assessed whether you are actually pregnant, whether the embryo is properly located in the uterus and whether there is any heart action. An estimate is made of the number of weeks of pregnancy but the exact duration cannot yet be said; the embryo is still too small for this.

In principle, the early ultrasound takes place at your own request, the costs are €46.50. When there is a medical indication for an early ultrasound, it will be reimbursed by the insurance company.

Keep in mind that an ultrasound at this term is sometimes difficult to do through the abdomen. Sometimes imaging requires the ultrasound to be done vaginally.

2Terminal ultrasound

Around 10-11 weeks of pregnancy, the term ultrasound takes place. This is intended to determine the duration of the pregnancy and the due date. This is done through the CRL measurement (crown breech length). Keep in mind that an ultrasound this early in the pregnancy is sometimes difficult to make through your belly. We always try, but it may be necessary to make the ultrasound vaginally. The term ultrasound is covered by the basic health insurance.

3Growth Echo

The midwife may find it necessary to have a growth ultrasound done on you. Indications for this may be an oversized or undersized baby in your past history or a suspicion of an oversized or undersized baby in your current pregnancy. If it is necessary to have this ultrasound, one of our midwives will discuss this with you and schedule it for you. This ultrasound will then be covered by your basic insurance.

4Location ultrasound

A location ultrasound is only done if the midwife sees reason to do so. For example, if during the external examination she doubts whether the baby is lying with its head down or she cannot assess this sufficiently on the hand. In that case she will schedule an ultrasound for you. The ultrasound is covered by the basic insurance when the midwife sees an indication for it.

5Amniotic fluid

If there is any doubt about the amount of amniotic fluid during the consultation or during previous ultrasounds, our ultrasound technicians can measure it for you. This ultrasound is also performed on medical grounds and is therefore covered by the basic health insurance.

6Rechecking IUD

If you choose to have an ultrasound to check if your IUD is in place, this is always at your own expense. The costs for this ultrasound are €35.00. The ultrasound takes place preferably 6 weeks after placing the coil. Usually this requires a vaginal ultrasound.

7Echo at your own request

From a large study has recently shown that the standard performance of growth echoes in low-risk pregnant women has no added value. Should you nevertheless wish to have extra growth ultrasounds, this is of course possible in our practice. Please keep in mind that our devices are intended for medical ultrasounds and we cannot make 3D or 4D images for you. The cost for an ultrasound on your own request is €45.00.
