Intra-uterine device (IUD)
The IUD is a plastic anchor 24-36 mm long which is placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy.
There are two types of spirals: the copper IUD and the hormone IUD. The copper IUD is hormone-free and therefore very suitable for when you cannot/want to use hormones. The hormone IUD contains progestogen. This is gradually delivered to the uterine wall so the dosage is much lower than with other forms of hormonal contraception.
Hormone IUD
For women under 21 years of age, contraception is reimbursed from basic insurance. For women older than 21 years, this reimbursement does not apply. If you have supplementary insurance, your insurance may reimburse (part of) your costs. Please note that this may have to be paid from your deductible. Contact your insurance company for more information about a possible deductible, the amount of the reimbursement and your own risk contribution. If you are not insured, you will have to pay for the contraception yourself.
Purchasing the spirals can be done in two ways. You can get a prescription from us and submit it yourself to your pharmacy. They will then submit the bill for the coil directly to your health insurance company if you are entitled to reimbursement.
We can also order the coil for you and have it delivered to our office. For this you will receive an invoice by mail which you must pay before the placement. You can then submit this invoice to your health insurance company.

Placement
The IUD is placed at our main locations on IJburg and in Amsterdam East. It is important to have a pregnancy and/or STD be excluded. Prior to the placement we will perform an internal examination to determine the position of your uterus and cervix. Then we will measure the length of your uterus before placing the IUD in the uterus..
IUD insertion can be sensitive. We therefore recommend taking 1000 mg of paracetamol and/or 400 mg of ibuprofen one hour prior to insertion. After the insertion, you may have some blood loss and a cramping feeling in the lower abdomen. This is usually short-lived. Furthermore, you may experience some irregular blood loss or abdominal cramps in the first few months after your IUD was placed. This is normal.
From 10-12 weeks after giving birth it is possible to have an IUD placed with us, but of course it is also possible to have an IUD placed when you have never given birth. If the IUD is placed within seven days after the first day of your last period, you are immediately protected against pregnancy. If it happens at any other time in your cycle, we advise you to use condoms additionally for another seven days.
Removing an IUD costs €63.53
